Gasp Tool Tests. No. 2

Two interesting screenshots that illuminate the issue between truetype hinting and the new DirectWrite based browsers on Windows. Comparing the the rasterization of the hinted Ubuntu Font against that of the unhinted version, the original font works well at small and large point sizes but there’s a ‘transition’ area between 17-20 pts were things go a little less smoothly compared to the unhinted version. The unhinted version of the font renders generally smoother across the whole size range.

Whilst fonts fully hinted with an old version 0 gasp table are backwards compatible with Windows OS’s and older screen hardware, they don’t seem 100% forward compatible with the new generation of Windows browsers.
